PORTLAND, Maine — The former Jordan’s Meats plant in Portland was gutted by a fire that sent billowing clouds of smoke over the city as the building was in the process of being demolished.
The fire at the abandoned building on the edge of the city’s Old Port was reported shortly after 1 p.m. Thursday. Demolition crews discovered the fire after returning from their lunch break.
Firefighters quickly brought the fire under control while scores of people gathered to watch. Central Maine Power had to shut off power to about 3,600 customers because of the fire.
Jordan’s Meats operated the plant for 77 years until it closed five years ago. It’s being razed to make room for a hotel, restaurant and condominiums.
