PORTLAND, Maine — A Maine-based oil spill recovery vessel is expected to arrive at the site of a massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico by noon next Tuesday.

U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree of Maine says the 208-foot Maine Responder will join nine other similar vessels from East Coast ports in an effort to contain oil leaking after the sinking of an offshore oil platform.

Pingree said Tuesday 12 oil skimming units remain in Portland Harbor, capable of capturing up to 31,000 barrels of oil a day in case of an accident.
