Mark your calendar: Spring cinema

All those under-the-radar and foreign releases over the winter and early spring are finding their way into area cinemas. Opening Friday and running until May 13 at Railroad Square Cinema in Waterville is “Babies,” a documentary that shows the first year in the life of four children in Namibia, Mongolia, Japan and San Francisco — just in time for Mother’s Day. Also at Railroad Square next week are “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,” based on the best-selling Stieg Larsson novel, the sexy English-French film “Chloe” and the Italian family comedy “Mid-August Lunch.” At The Grand in Ellsworth at 2 and 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 12, is “Fish Tank,” the critically acclaimed, Cannes-honored, BAFTA-winning British movie about a 15-year-old girl dealing with her mother’s new boyfriend. Reel Pizza Cinerama in Bar Harbor will show two European movies — “The Secret of Kells,” the whimsical, dreamlike Irish film nominated for a Best Animated Feature Academy Award, May 7-10; and “A Prophet,” the gripping, well-written French prison drama, May 11-13.

If none of that floats your boat, however, you can always go see “Iron Man 2,” opening in theaters Friday.
