What lessons are to be learned from the oil rig spill?

Does the oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico mean new off-shore oil extraction will be on hold

for years? Should the leak, and the environmental disaster it is causing, be a cautionary

tale for such extraction? Or can these sorts of problems be averted with better

technology? Has the Obama administration responded quickly and effectively enough?

Will oil rig owner British Petroleum come through with its promise to pay for clean up of

the spill?
