Biding time

Posted May 03, 2010, at 7:42 a.m.

A young man squats
by a liquor store
holding forth
matter-of-factly on
stories from maine
reservations,
his eyes cast down
he bides his time
like a tribal man,
his pride held
in a paper cup
as I haunch down
beside him while the
hurried drop of a coin
briefly salves
a passerby’s gust of
consciousness.
