Poetry contest winners announced in Rockland

ROCKLAND, Maine — The city and the Rockland Public Library have named Kendall Merriam Rockland Poet Laureate.

The announcement was made Friday evening at the “Swarm of Poets” poetry event at the library. Ten area poets read their works.

Poetry Month Chair Carol Bachofner also announced the adult and student winners of the Rockland Poetry Contest. The winners were:

Children: “Rockland My Town” by Isaiah Collins; “Fire Flies” by Lucas Fischer.

Teens: “The Day I Jumped Into the Snow” by Emma Collins, first place; “The Publication at Storer’s Wharf” by Caleb Reed, second place; “The City that Rests on the Sea” by Mckyla Follett; “The Seasons of Midcoast Maine” by Kaitlyn Harvill; “Breakwater” by Hope Clark.

Adults: “Waves, or Did You Know My Uncle Young?” Patricia Smith Ranzoni, first place; “Dark Harbor” by Dave Morrison, second place; “Pothole Season” by Sally Jones; “January-Song in E Minor” by Gayle LaVallee; “Where the Water Breaks” by Robert Winslow; “The Loon” by Charles Brown.

Winning poems will be listed at rocklandlibrary.org.
