SPRINGFIELD, Maine — A local man was arrested early Thursday after police said he terrorized his wife and fired a single round from his AK-47 assault rifle at their Mill Hill Road home.

Frank Ring, 52, was charged with terrorizing, obstructing the reporting of a crime and criminal mischief. He was being held at Penobscot County Jail in Bangor on $500 cash bail and was expected to make bail Thursday night, jail officials said.

Officers found and confiscated the fully loaded AK-47 — which had a chambered round — during a search of woods near Ring’s home where he told them it would be, Sgt. Scott Young of the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Department said. A crime involving such a powerful weapon is rare in Maine, he said.

“It’s the first time I have come across an AK-47 in my entire career,” said Young, who has been an officer for 15 years.

A half-dozen state police officers and sheriff’s deputies rushed to Ring’s home after his wife called 911 at about 10:50 p.m. and reported that Ring appeared to be intoxicated and was smashing things, Young said.

“She was basically afraid for her safety at that point,” Young said.

Then Ring took the telephone from her and yelled that he would shoot anyone who came onto his property, the sergeant said. The wife and her three children fled the house, and from a neighbor’s residence she called 911 and reported seeing Ring load the rifle, Young said.

The first officers to arrive said they heard a single gunshot from the house or near it. Still en route, Young telephoned the house from his police cruiser but was hung up on. He called again and left a message, he said.

Officers had arrived and were near the house when they saw a man walking toward them from woods probably 100 yards away. They quickly identified him as Ring and took him into custody without incident, Young said.

“Overall, given the circumstances and the information we received, I think the officers handled the situation very well,” Young said.

Young said Ring complained of a severe headache and back pain. Officers took him to Penobscot Valley Hospital in Lincoln before driving him to the jail, Young said.

Springfield is a small northern Penobscot County town about 20 miles northeast of Lincoln along Route 6.

Ring does not have a criminal record in Maine, according to a check of the Maine State Bureau of Identification database.
