Town office move on Hartland agenda

By Christopher Cousins, BDN Staff

HARTLAND, Maine — Voters here will gather Friday and Saturday to elect town officials and decide on a spending plan for the 2010 fiscal year, among other items.

Town Manager Larry Post said that due to a financial restructuring that has occurred over the past several months with the help of the Maine Bond Bank, municipal spending is proposed to drop by about $47,000. The savings are due to lower debt payments that are a result of the refinancing.

The town’s overall proposed budget of $1,360,947 does not include spending for public schools or county government, whose budgets are still under development.

“We’ve tried to hold the line while maintaining our past tradition of having excellent services,” said Post.

In addition to numerous routine items in the 23-article town meeting warrant, voters will be asked whether to accept ownership of the Scott Webb Medical Building on Great Moose Drive for use as a town office complex. Another item authorizes selectmen to sell the current town hall. According to the town report, the cost of purchasing the building will be covered with revenue from renting part of it.

The town meeting begins at 9 a.m. Saturday at the town hall.

On Friday, voters will choose three out of four candidates to serve on the Board of Selectmen. The candidates are incumbents Judith E. Alton and Michael J. Brown as well as newcomers Christopher A. Littlefield and Barry D Russell.

Regional School Unit 19 director Dwayne Littlefield is running unopposed, as is Town Clerk Joyce P. Halford.

There are 12 seats available on the town’s budget committee and only 11 candidates, which Post said raises the possibility that a write-in candidate will be named to the committee.

Voting will take place from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at the town hall.
