OLD TOWN, Maine — All three major facets of the game — pitching, defense and offense — worked in favor of the Old Town softball team Saturday as the Coyotes convincingly swept a doubleheader from Presque Isle.
Coach Lester Cowan’s club took the first game 7-1 behind a solid pitching performance from senior righthander Hannah Morin, while fellow righty McKayla Gastia, a junior, took a no-hitter into the sixth inning of the second contest, which Old Town won, 11-4.
The Coyotes are now 3-0 on the spring, while Presque Isle was playing its first two games of the season.
In the first game, Morin scattered one earned run on six hits while recording five strikeouts, holding the Wildcats off-balance with a wide array of pitches.
Old Town jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning, thanks to run-scoring doubles by Gastia and Micayla Hussey.
After Presque Isle got one back in the third on an RBI groundout by Alicia Kierstead, the Coyotes responded with a three-run uprising in the fourth and a two-run rally in the sixth to break it open.
Morin contributed to her own cause with a sharp RBI double to left in the fourth while Whitney Leland later drove in a run with a double.
Senior catcher Amy Singer drove in Old Town’s final run with an RBI single in the sixth while Megan Cousins scored the other run on an error.
Alecia Palmer had Presque Isle’s lone extra-base hit with a third-inning double.
The Coyotes made no errors in the first game.
In the second game, Old Town strung together a 10-run, 11-hit attack to back a two-hit effort by Gastia and a defense that committed just one error.
Micayla Hussey singled in a run in the second to put the Coyotes on the board first, while Singer’s two-run double to deep center highlighted a three-run fourth.
Old Town put it away with a five-run fifth inning, with Morin just missing a home run with an RBI double off the centerfield fence, while Cousins recorded a bases-loaded double.
Gastia, who notched five strikeouts, didn’t surrender a hit until Kayla Richards’ RBI triple to left-center in the sixth. Krista Coffin recorded Presque Isle’s other hit with an RBI single.
Morin drove in three runs on the afternoon for Old Town, while Cossar scored four runs and knocked in three.
