MERCER, Maine — The pilot of a small, homemade plane whose engine conked out walked away from the aircraft after it crashed in a field in Mercer.

Seventy-five-year-old Alton Carter of Industry tells the Morning Sentinel of Waterville he walked away from the plane with only a brush burn from the seat belt after Tuesday’s incident. Carter had taken off from Norridgewock airport about four miles away.

The plane was largely intact after it was brought down in a soggy hay field.
