BANGOR, Maine — After a one-year hiatus, the Bangor Garden Show has returned to the Bangor Auditorium.
The three-day event, which opens at 10 a.m. Friday and runs through 4 p.m. Sunday, will feature more than 50 area landscape and gardening vendors as well as several competitive gardening displays and a photo contest. Admission is $5, and children under age 12 get in free.
“We’ve captured the best of what we’ve offered in years past, and we’re bringing it back to the delight of vendors,” said show organizer Judith Perkins. “We literally have every type of vendor that supports landscaping and gardening represented,” Perkins said.
The Bangor Garden Show was launched in 1991 at the Bangor Auditorium and had been held every April until last year when it was canceled for financial reasons. Ticket sales for the event dropped from 15,000 in 1999 to 7,286 in 2008, according to Bass Park figures, although it remains one of the best-attended events at the auditorium. The event costs about $20,000 for a three-day weekend.
Although this year’s event will look a lot like garden shows of the past, Perkins said it will be much more interactive and hands-on for avid gardeners and beginners alike. Among the 14 featured demonstrations are making a rain garden and building a home compost pile.
The event also spreads out vendors and demonstrations throughout the entire auditorium.
“We’ve taken the auditorium and we’ve maximized every nook and cranny,” Perkins said.
Another new element is a small-scale farmers market, which Perkins hopes will grow in future years. As always, there will be a variety of food and drink options from area caterers.
“People can definitely make a day out of it,” she said.
The show is the primary fundraiser for Keep Bangor Beautiful, a nonprofit organization that is responsible for recycling and litter and graffiti cleanup in the city.
The full hours of the show are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.
