LEWISTON, Maine — Eleven former prisoners of war are among the 41 veterans to receive special state honors.

The former POWs, mostly from the Lewiston-Auburn area, were to receive State of Maine Silver Star Honorable Service Medals during a presentation at the old Lewiston Armory on Saturday afternoon.

They’re among the veterans of World War II, Korean and Vietnam wars who will receive their medals. Many of the veterans are Purple Heart recipients.

Eighteen Silver Star recipients who can’t attend will be recognized during the ceremony.
