Should the president nominate a moderate justice?

With the retirement of Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens, President Barack Obama has the opportunity to nominate a second justice to the high court (Sonia

Sotomayor was confirmed last year). Should he choose a moderately liberal candidate to appease Republicans in the Senate? Should he consider a judge whose views may be liberal on some matters and conservative on others? Or is it important for him to nominate a strong liberal to counter the court’s conservative leanings in recent rulings?
