Man dies in crash on turnpike

ARUNDEL, Maine — A 65-year-old Maryland man was killed and his wife seriously injured in a one-car crash Thursday on the Maine Turnpike, according to Maine State Police.

Troopers said the car drifted across three lanes of southbound traffic and slammed into a tree alongside the road at about 6:30 p.m.

Spokesman Stephen McCausland said Denis Bryant of Bowie, Md., died at the scene. His wife, Patricia Bryant, whose age was not immediately available, suffered multiple injuries and was flown to Maine Medical Center in Portland by LifeFlight helicopter, he said.

A team of six troopers investigated the crash and believe that Bryant either fell asleep or suffered a medical condition, McCausland said. The car was a 2006 Toyota Prius.
