Hike for the Homeless Saturday in Bangor

BANGOR, Maine — When experiencing homelessness there is nothing like a hot meal and a safe place to go for shelter.

The Bangor Area Homeless Shelter is there to help those in need, and to support their efforts people from all over the region gather each year to raise money and awareness through the Hike for the Homeless. The 15th annual hike is Saturday.

“Over the past year, more than 2,000 individuals visited the Bangor Area Homeless Shelter in need of a clean, safe place to stay, a warm meal, and other supportive services,” a brochure about the event states. “Donations are what allow the shelter to stay open and provide assistance to so many people. All the money raised at the hike supports the homeless right here in Greater Bangor.”

Separate hikes will begin at 10 a.m. at Hampden Academy, at 10:30 a.m. at the Cianchette Building in Brewer, at 10 a.m. at the Veazie Community School and at 10:30 a.m. at Husson University.

In years past, individual groups have worn their high school team or town colors and have provided a visual sea of community support for the event.

Everyone in the hike will finish at the same spot, on the Bangor Waterfront near the Sea Dog Restaurant, where a cookout will feed participants and raffle prizes will be awarded.

This year’s goal is to raise $50,000 to support the programs in Bangor, said Dennis Marble, shelter director.

“With demand continuing to rise, and government support down, we are reliant on the support of the local community,” he has said.

While there is no requirement to raise funds to participate, each person is asked to give $5.

“Too many people are homeless in our community,” the Hike for the Homeless brochure said. “Join us in making a difference. Together let’s tell homelessness to take a hike in our region.”
