BANGOR, Maine — Police are searching for a man with a history of arrests for assault who was seen choking a woman near his home on Ohio Street on Tuesday evening, Bangor police Sgt. Paul Edwards said Thursday.

A man living on Autumn Street saw the man, later identified as Stephone M. Ross, 40, choking the 33-year-old woman around 6:35 p.m.

“The witness stated he yelled out his apartment window that he was calling the police,” Edwards said in a press release. “The suspect then fled the area.”

Ross, a 6-foot-1-inch black man who weighs 235 pounds, took off in his family van that he ditched shortly afterward and took off on foot, the sergeant said.

The suspect “may be with friends in the Old Town area,” Edwards said.

After Ross did not return home, police released information about their search for him.

“He does have prior arrests for assault,” Edwards said.

Police interviewed the woman, who was visibly shaken by the incident but did not need medical treatment.

Anyone who has seen Ross or who has information about the incident is asked to call the Bangor Police Department at 947-7382. Those who want to use the department’s anonymous tip line can press extension 6 when prompted.
