ALBANY, N.Y. — The University of Maine wanted to open its America East baseball season on a positive note Saturday afternoon.
Instead, it was the Albany Great Danes who got the jump on the Black Bears.
Kyle Crean’s two-out, RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning off UMaine reliever Barry Keiffer provided the winning run as the Great Danes outslugged the Bears 11-10 at Varsity Field.
Albany (2-20, 1-0 AE) built a 9-3 advantage, then pulled out the victory after UMaine (15-14, 0-1 AE) had rallied to tie the contest 9-9, then 10-10.
The two teams play a noon doubleheader today.
Greg Lutton (1-3) earned the win with two inings of three-hit, one run relief. Ralph Keppler paced Albany with three RBI singles, then walked and eventually scored the winning run.
“We lost the baseball game today, they didn’t win it,” said UMaine coach Steve Trimper. “We gave them a gift, with a big, red bow.
UMaine committed four throwing errors, three of them by freshman starter Steve Perakslis.
“We made throwing errors, we didn’t block the ball well, and we’ve got to play better than that,” Trimper said. “We didn’t play defense today like we’re capable of playing.”
Taylor Lewis paced the Bears with two doubles and an RBI single, while Tony Patane posted a two-run double and two singles. Matt Howard added a double and a single with Ian Leisenheimer hit a game-tying, three-run home run in the sixth.
Keith Bilodeau (0-1) pitched well in relief of Perakslis, allowing four hits and two runs (one earned) in four-plus innings. He struck out six and did not walk a batter.
Bilodeau has been working his way back from some shoulder soreness.
“He looked really good. He had command, throwing two pitches for strikes. We need him back,” Trimper said.
