ALDEN G. SMITH SR.

BANGOR and NORTH FORT MYERS, Fla. – Laden G. Smith Sr., 77, passed away April 6, 2010, with his loving and devoted wife of 56 years, Barbara, at his side at a Cape Coral, Fla., hospice hospital after a courageous battle with cancer. Alden was born May 14, 1932, in Hampden, the youngest child of Edwin L. and Faith (Emerson) Smith. He graduated from Hermon High School where he excelled in basketball and attended the University of Maine before serving in the U.S. Army in Germany during the Korean War. After his military service, he worked for many years at Webber Oil Co., and later managed Webber Supply Inc. He left Webber in 1972 to co-own Morin Candy Co. Years later, after selling the wholesale company, he returned to work in the field of heating at Webber Supply Inc. until his retirement in 1998. After retiring he and Barbara fulfilled their dream of becoming full time “RV’ers,” spending winters in Florida and Texas, and exploring the country. He was predeceased by his parents; and his brother, Edwin Smith. He is survived by his wife, Barbara of North Fort Myers, Fla.; his sister, Lelma “Tutor” Russell of Davis, Calif.; sister-in-law, Delores White of Rochester, N.Y.; his children, Alden “Jerry” Smith Jr. and his wife, Diane, of Veazie and Robert “Bob” Smith of Corinna; grandchildren, Charity Smith Ayer of Bangor, Ryan Smith and wife, Stephanie, of Bangor, and Erin Smith of Old Town; many cousins, nieces and nephews. “Pup” will be dearly missed by his grandchildren, all of whom he was very proud. Memorial services to celebrate Alden’s life will be held 2 p.m. Monday, April 12, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor, with the Rev. Dr. Jerry Mick, senior pastor of Bangor Baptist Church, officiating. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments immediately after the service at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center St., Bangor. Graveside services for the family will be held at a later date at Lakeview Cemetery, Hampden.
