ELLSWORTH, Maine — An Ellsworth woman and a Bucksport woman were hospitalized Monday for injuries they suffered in a near head-on collision near the entrance of Woodland Acres Mobile Home Park on Bucksport Road, also known as U.S. Route 1.

Injured in the accident were Barbara Ameen, 62, of Ellsworth and Kathryn Grindle, 51, of Bucksport, according to Ellsworth police Officer Christopher Smith.

Smith said that both women were taken to Maine Coast Memorial Hospital in Ellsworth after the crash. Ameen was listed in stable condition.

Grindle later was flown by LifeFlight helicopter to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, where a nursing supervisor said she still was being evaluated Monday night.

The accident occurred shortly after 5:30 p.m., when Grindle, who was headed east in her 2004 Chrysler Pacifica, for an unknown reason crossed into the path of Ameen’s 1999 GMC Jimmy, which was headed west, Smith said, citing witnesses accounts.

He said Ameen reportedly swerved to avoid a crash but that the two vehicles collided “driver’s side to driver’s side.” Ameen’s vehicle then rolled over onto its roof, while Grindle’s vehicle continued to travel east until it went off the road, he said.

Neither driver had passengers and both were wearing seat belts at the time of the accident, Smith said. He said air bags in both vehicles deployed and that both vehicles were demolished.

The accident remained under investigation Monday night, Smith said. He was assisted at the scene by Ellsworth police Officer Chad Wilmot.
