Maine steals 2 wins

NEWARK, N.J. — The Black Bears stole 16 bases, including a school-record 10 in the first game, as the University of Maine swept the New Jersey Institute of Technology 7-1 and 11-4 at Riverfront Stadium.

In the first game, Taylor Lewis stole four bases and scored two runs for the Black Bears. Michael Fransoso hit two doubles, scored two runs and stole two bases.

Joe Mercurio, Ian Leisenheimer, Pat Thibodeau and George Tager were also part of the record steals mark.

Joey Martin hit a sacrifice fly in the first and a three-run home run in the third for the Bears. Mercurio and Myckie Lugbauer also recorded two singles.

Steve Perakslis improved to 2-3 after allowing one run on six hits and a walk through six innings for Maine. He struck out seven. Justin Latte pitched a perfect seventh while striking out two.

Teddy Bickert led the Highlanders with a double, single and RBI. Matt Petrone singled twice.

In the second game, the Black Bears pounded 16 hits while adding six more steals.

Lewis, Ian Leisenheimer and Matt Howard each stole two bases.

Tyler Patzalek led 12-13 Maine with two singles, a triple, three runs scored and two RBIs. Lewis also had three hits, all singles.

Justin Leisenheimer hit a two-run homer in the ninth and Howard had a triple, single and three runs scored.

Barry Keiffer (2-1) earned the win in relief by allowing just one hit, no runs and no walks over 4-plus innings. Starter A.J. Bazdanes, Keiffer and Kyle Benoit combined to strike out 11.

Matt Tomczyk hit a two-run single in the first inning to put 4-17 NJIT on top 2-0 before the Black Bears tied it in the third.

Vincent Del Vecchio had two singles and scored a run. Jesus Jaile doubled.
