PORTLAND, Maine — Sen. Olympia Snowe says the health care overhaul will hurt small businesses, not help them as President Barack Obama said at a rally Thursday in Portland.
During the rally, Snowe was in central Maine, where she told Skowhegan residents that the overhaul will add to the federal deficit and impose “serious penalties on businesses.”
On Thursday, Obama recognized Snowe in Portland, calling her a friend and thanking her for her efforts to reach a bipartisan compromise on health care. There was polite applause.
The Maine Republican says she isn’t committed to a wholesale repeal of the health care law. But she says there are parts of it that need to be taken back. She has criticized Obama and Congress for moving too fast on health care reform.
