East Millinocket man piloted Obama to Portland

The Associated Press

PORTLAND, Maine — The Marine behind the controls of the presidential helicopter that landed Thursday at Portland International Jetport was a Mainer.

Maj. Jeremy Deveau, an East Millinocket native, let some family members tour the Sikorsky S-70 Whitehawk at the airport while Obama was speaking at the Portland Expo.

The Marine detachment said visibility was so bad on a test flight the day before the president’s visit that the pilots used the Maine Turnpike to guide them to Portland. But visibility was fine on Thursday, with bright blue skies as the president arrived aboard Marine One.
