NEWPORT, Maine — The search for a man who robbed a TD Bank branch Wednesday on Main Street continued Thursday without an arrest, though Police Chief Leonard Macdaid said he’s confident that tips pouring in from the public will advance the investigation.

“The more we can get that picture out there, the better,” said Macdaid, referring to an image captured by security cameras of a young man wearing a white hat shaped like the top of a mushroom. The suspect, who is about 5 feet 6 inches tall and in his late teens or early 20s, ditched the hat behind the bank during his escape.

The suspect was given a moneybag but investigators have not said how much money he escaped with, if any.

Macdaid said Thursday that officers have been busy following up on numerous tips called in to the Police Department. Many of the tips have led to dead ends, but Macdaid said that fact should not cause anyone to hesitate calling investigators if they know something.

“We don’t consider anything a false lead,” he said. “Every little bit of information helps.”

Macdaid would not comment on whether investigators know who the perpetrator is or speculate on the likelihood of an arrest.

Anyone with information about the robbery should call Newport police at 368-3263 or Maine State Police at 866-2122.
