Hike for the Homeless fundraiser announced

By Joni Averill

Now that spring officially has arrived, it’s time to register for the Bangor Area Homeless Shelter’s 15th annual Hike for the Homeless scheduled for Saturday, April 10.

The fundraiser, which formerly was an ascent of Mount Katahdin, said shelter executive director Dennis Marble, “is now an effort seeking to attract public involvement with the shelter and the issue of homelessness.”

“It’s a great opportunity for people to get involved,” Marble said, noting that last year more than 600 people gathered at the Bangor Waterfront “to stand in support of people experiencing homelessness.”

Participants now include representatives of “area businesses, churches, schools and social organizations, and has grown in scope every year,” he added.

The hike’s “dual purpose” is to raise necessary operating funds and enable the shelter to continue its visible “advocacy and educational efforts,” Marble reported.

Support of that work during this fundraiser occurs though a variety of methods, “including registration and pledges, the sale of raffle tickets and outright donations,” Marble wrote.

He especially wants readers to know that “all funds raised stay right here and go to the Shelter.”

This year’s goal is an ambitious $50,000.

“With demand continuing to rise, and government support down, we are reliant on the support of the local community at the highest level ever,” Marble stressed.

“Luckily, we have an absolutely terrific team of volunteers leading our efforts this year.”
