ELLSWORTH, Maine — An Eastbrook man faces charges in connection with a string of burglaries at homes throughout Hancock County.

Randy Garland, 45, was arrested Friday and charged with burglary after an investigation by the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department that began earlier this month.

Deputies first heard about the burglaries early on March 12, according to Lt. Pat Kane of the Sheriff’s Department. They identified several summer homes from the Cape Rosier Peninsula in Brooksville to Township 10 and the Sullivan area that had been entered.

Copper wire and tubing had been cut from at least three of the homes, Kane said.

Most of the properties involved in the burglaries were summer homes, which has made it difficult to develop a list of the stolen property and determine a value for it, Kane said.

β€œIt’s March, and a lot of the owners haven’t been back to their camps yet,” he said. β€œWe’re still waiting for some owners to come up and give us a complete list of the items that are missing.”

The officers have conducted several search warrants in connection with the burglaries and have recovered some of the stolen property. Kane said Garland was arrested after deputies found some of the stolen items in his possession. He remained in custody as of Tuesday afternoon at the Hancock County Jail.

The deputies are working closely with the Maine State Police, which also is investigating similar burglaries in the Sullivan area.

These investigations are ongoing. Kane said the deputies suspect there are more summer home burglaries that have not been reported yet. He urged anyone who owns a summer home in any of these areas to check their property and report anything suspicious to the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department at 667-7575.
