Library to hold fashion show

By Christopher Cousins, BDN Staff

NEWPORT, Maine — Young folks preparing for their high school proms can find everything they need in a most unlikely place: the library.

The Newport Cultural Center on Main Street, which also houses the Newport Public Library, will hold the first Pre-Prom Fashion Show beginning at noon Saturday. Young models from Nokomis Regional High School will showcase a variety of dresses and tuxedos, complete with a catwalk and an announcer.

But this fashion show packs a bonus, said Newport librarian Joanne Elwell, one of the people organizing the event with the support of a grant from Jobs for Maine Graduates.

“They can theoretically get everything they need for prom, right here,” said Elwell. “We tried to think of everything.”

A team of local vendors will be on-site taking orders, measuring and making appointments for prom day. Participating vendors from Newport include Blooming Barn, florist; Foxy Hair Design; Chris Lindsey Photography; Generations, salon; Guys n’ Gals, salon; Millennium, bridal salon; Mary Kay consultant Jane Briggs; Pol-ished, nail salon, and Salon Red. Also participating are Jacque’s Floral & Gifts of Hartland, which rents tuxedos, and Deb’s Fashion of Bangor, which will supply dresses for the runway show. The event will be catered by Sail-In Cafe of Newport, and numerous door prizes from local businesses will be distributed.

The vendors will be prepared to take measurements and orders, said Elwell. Students from any high school are welcome, and there is no cover charge.

“We really wanted to support local businesses,” said Elwell. “Some people don’t realize that you can get almost everything you need right around here.”

The fashion show’s organizers are hoping to make the Pre-Prom Fashion Show an annual event as a means of providing a service for teenagers, whom they are trying to attract to the library.

The fashion show runs from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday, with the runway show beginning at 1:30 p.m. For information, call the Newport Cultural Center at 368-4410.
