Damon recognized by gay advocacy group

PORTLAND, Maine — Maine’s largest gay and lesbian advocacy organization is honoring state Sen. Dennis Damon, who sponsored last year’s bill allowing gays and lesbians to marry.

Damon is being recognized for legislative leadership at EqualityMaine’s 26th annual awards dinner Saturday in Portland.

Damon, a Democrat from Trenton, sponsored the bill that was approved by the Legislature allowing gay marriage in Maine. Voters later overturned the law in a statewide referendum in November.

EqualityMaine is also recognizing more than a dozen other people for their work.
