ELLSWORTH, Maine — The Hancock County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the theft of as many as nine guns from homes in Waltham and Eastbrook.

Detective Alan Brown said there was a delay in reporting the thefts. One incident took place almost four months ago, he said. The others took place over a weekend earlier this month.

Three of the homes hit by thieves are located in Waltham, and the fourth is in Eastbrook.

Investigators have recovered one of the stolen rifles, Brown said Thursday. One of the homeowners also recovered two pistols and a rifle.

At this point, Brown said, he could not discuss how the guns were recovered.

“There are still approximately five firearms that are not accounted for. All of those are ‘long guns,’” he said.

Brown said they do have suspects in the case, and the investigation is continuing.
