Husson’s home opener set today

The Husson University Eagles, after playing their first 15 games on the road, will open their home schedule today, weather permitting, when they entertain Bates College for a pair of nine-inning games beginning at 1 p.m. at the Winkin Baseball Complex.

Jason Harvey’s Eagles are 7-8 while Edwin Thompson’s Bobcats of Lewiston are 6-3.

If the twinbill is postponed, it will most likely be bumped to Thursday, according to Harvey.

“The guys are very excited to get on their home field,” said Harvey, whose Eagles will open defense of their Northeast Athletic Conference title with a pair of home doubleheaders against the University of Maine-Farmington on Saturday and Sunday.

He has been satisfied with his team so far.

“We’re getting there,” said Harvey. “Our pitching and defense have been [good] pretty much the whole year. Our pitchers have thrown the ball well and kept us in every game.

“We started off slow, offensively, but we’re starting to come around. We’ve had some individual guys with good [hitting] seasons so far. but collectively, we aren’t where we want to be.”

Junior shortstop Ethan Guerette is off to a fast start, hitting .375 with a homer, 12 RBIs and eight stolen bases in eight attempts. Center fielder Tom Crews also has 12 RBIs.

Right fielder–designated hitter Shawn Smith (.339-0-9) is Husson’s second leading hitter among the regulars but will miss the twinbill with a hamstring injury, according to Harvey.

Left fielder Kyle Vanidestine is hitting .292 with four RBIs, and first baseman Chris Maguire, right fielder Chase Daniels and second baseman Cody Haverly-Johndro are all hitting .286. Maguire has six RBIs while Daniels and Haverly-Johndro have four each.

Junior righthander Bill Bart (0-1, 4.66 ERA) and freshman righty Bill Doherty (0-0, 10.38) will get the starts.

Bates has been led by 1B Noah Lynd (.455-3-6), second baseman Noah Burke (.444-1-6) of Appleton, DH Jacob Simon (.433-4-16) and SS Tom Beaton (.429-0-6). Former Bangor High School standout Gordy Webb (.259-0-4) is Bates’ catcher.
