AUGUSTA, Maine — A legislative committee has rejected a bill prohibiting Maine businesses from firing employees who take sick days off from work.
The original bill would have required businesses to provide paid sick days to employees. But after the business community objected, the bill was amended to allow workers to sue employers they felt improperly fired them for taking time off for being sick.
On Monday, the Legislature’s Labor Committee rejected the amended bill by a vote of 9-2.
The Kennebec Journal says the bill will still be considered by the full Legislature because it received some support in the committee, but it’s unlikely to pass.
