To those hundreds who braved the cold to get one last sandwich at the Coffee Pot last December, your prayers have been answered. Cheryl Whittaker and Kathie Potter, two longtime employees of Bangor’s now-closed iconic State Street eatery, will open a new Coffee Pot Cafe in the former location of Starbucks, next to Bangor Savings Bank, on Broadway in Bangor on Friday, April 16. Whittaker and Potter have worked over the past few months with local dentist Dr. Robert Erickson and his wife, Sally, to finance and open the place, which will seat 20. The establishment will serve sandwiches like the old Coffee Pot — ham or salami, onions, cheese and vegetables, with red pepper and oil. In a surprising twist, the new restaurant actually will serve coffee.
I never knew I wanted to try javelina, but a dinner set for Saturday, April 10, at Unity College has changed my mind. The fourth annual Unity College Sportsmen’s Conference and Dinner will kick off at 4 p.m. at the Unity College Centre for the Performing Arts, with a selection of appetizers, followed by a meal featuring game meats from around the world. On the menu will be moose, duck, venison, beaver, bear, bighorn sheep and javelina. While the first five creatures aren’t strangers to this corner of the Earth, the others are less known. Javelina is a wild pig that’s popular game meat in Arizona, with a taste similar to pork, while bighorn sheep, also found out West, tastes like a fattier beef. Admission to the dinner is $15; $20 for the conference and dinner or $25 the day of the event. There also is a VIP ticket for $25, which ensures you prime cuts of the meat. It’s not often that an e-mail makes your mouth water, but reading the message that came into my inbox from Ellsworth restaurant Cleonice did just that. For starters, chef Rich Hansen and the Cleonice staff will hold a six-course Greek wine dinner at 6 p.m. this Sunday, March 28, featuring an assortment of meze (Greek tapas, essentially), grilled spring lamb tenderloin and slow-cooked lamb shoulder. The food will be paired with a selection of Greek wines from Chris Badini from Athenee Imports, including sparkling Ode Panos wine and Agiorgitko red Nemea wine. The cost is $69 per person, gratuity not included. Also on the menu is the Tuesday-Thursday $25 four-course meal special, which features a choice of three tapas, a cup of soup or a small salad, a choice of two entrees and a choice of two desserts. Finally, for sandwich fans, Hansen started making his own corned beef a few weeks ago, curing a brisket just to see what it would taste like. Apparently, the result was most pleasing, and now Cleonice will serve a Reuben sandwich at lunch on Mondays and Tuesdays. 30-Acre Farm in Whitefield supplies the sauerkraut, Cleonice makes rye bread and Russian dressing from scratch, starting with their own chicken eggs for mayonnaise, and it’s topped with imported Emmenthaler cheese. As a Reuben snob and aficionado, I believe I’ll need to stop for lunch at Cleonice very soon.
