Cape Elizabeth seventh-grader wins state spelling bee

PORTLAND, Maine — A seventh-grade student from Cape Elizabeth has won the Maine State Spelling Bee and will be going to the 2010 Scripps National Spelling Bee.

Thirteen-year-old Lily Jordan correctly spelled “salmonella” to win Saturday’s competition at the University of Southern Maine in Portland.

Thirteen of Maine’s 16 counties were represented at the spelling bee. It was sponsored by the Portland Press Herald.

The national competition is held in Washington, D.C., in June.
