PORTLAND, Maine — Portland police say an out-of-state couple whose child is being treated at the Maine Medical Center was assaulted and robbed by a man and woman after they left the hospital to run an errand.

Police say the male victim, who is in his late 20s, was stabbed during the assault on Congress Street at about 7:50 p.m. Monday, but his injuries did not appear to be life threatening.

Police did not release the names of the victims or say where they are from.

Police say the female suspect hit the woman and stole her purse while the male assailant stabbed the woman’s husband.

The Portland Press Herald says police are checking surveillance tapes, interviewing witnesses and canvassing the neighborhood in hopes of apprehending the suspects.
