EASTBROOK, Maine — A single-vehicle accident early Friday morning sent an unidentified driver to the hospital and blocked Sugar Hill Road for almost seven hours.

According to Maine State Police Trooper Gregory Roy, the initial call from passers-by came in at about 12:30 a.m. Friday.

The male driver, whose name had not been released Friday afternoon, went off Sugar Hill Road in his pickup truck, Roy said. The vehicle struck a utility pole, and the man was ejected from the vehicle.

Although the call came in at 12:30 a.m., Roy said, it was unclear how long the wreck had been there before it was discovered by the passers-by.

Eric Perkins, 21, of Ellsworth said he was on the way back to Ellsworth with friends when they came upon the accident. The truck was partly in the woods, partly in the ditch, he said. They saw the driver facedown in the water in the ditch.

“Nobody wanted to touch him,” said Perkins. “When I flipped him over, his eyes were glazed over; he wasn’t breathing. He was unconscious. I thought he was dead or pretty close to it.”

He and a friend, Richard “Buster” Brown of Lamoine, pulled the man out of the ditch and tried to revive him.

“We kept slapping him in the face and yelling at him,” Perkins said. “Pretty soon, he started coughing up water and blood. He was breathing weird, but he started to come to.”

The two men remained with the driver until help arrived.

According to Trooper Roy, the driver suffered serious spine and neck injuries. Although he was conscious, he was not able to remember any details about the crash. The man was taken to Maine Coast Memorial Hospital in Ellsworth.

There was no word on his condition Friday afternoon.

The impact from the pickup truck snapped the utility pole and the lines came down across the road.

It was about 7 a.m. Friday before crews were able to repair the pole and power lines and the road was opened back up, Roy said.
