This ‘Idol’ season has me waffling

This season of “American Idol” has turned me into the new Dunkin’ Donuts commercial — I’m waffling around all over the place.

In one night I went from loving Andrew Garcia and Casey James to rooting for Big Mike (a favorite since the auditions that I wasn’t sure was a final contender) and Lee Dewyze. And Tim Urban is coming in a close third.

What I’m not sure about was Kara’s emotional reaction to Big Mike’s performance. This season has shown us a more critical and harsher Kara, and that moment seemed a little odd. And what’s with Simon getting all mushy — apologizing to contestants, telling them they’re nice people and softening his harsh comments by starting off with something nice? Who is this man and what has his fiancee done to him? Whatever it is, I hope she keeps it up.

Then, on top of it all, there’s Crystal Bowersox. She started out her stage career as Suzie Snowflake in the first grade and by the age of 10 she was putting on shows. You can tell her heart’s in it and the favorite quote she lists on the “American Idol” Web site says it all: “Success ain’t about the money, it’s about doing what you love.”

She loves it and if she keeps it up, she’s my first pick for the top three.

I’m also pleased to announce that another of my reality favorites this season has been renewed by CBS. “Undercover Boss,” which I predicted would do well, has been picked up for a second season as it has seen strong ratings even after its record-breaking post-Super Bowl premiere.

The list of companies that will be featured hasn’t been released, but I’ve got my eyes and ears open.

Another favorite’s also returning for the summer. “America’s Got Talent” will premiere its fifth season, but according to Reality TV World’s Web site it will be without judge and “Baywatch” star David Hasselhoff. Instead, Howie Mandel will be taking his place alongside Sharon Osborne and Piers Morgan.

The show’s set to premiere with two nights of auditions at 8 p.m. June 1 and 9 p.m. June 2.
