PORTLAND, Maine — The U.S. Senate has confirmed a Maine man to become the federal co-chairperson of a commission that aims to create jobs and boost the economy in the northern reaches of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont and New York.

Sandy Blitz of Hudson was confirmed Wednesday night for the new position with the Northern Border Regional Commission.

Blitz owns a company that helps public and private institutions get government grants and loans and recently served as regional administrator of the Small Business Administration.

The commission will help create jobs in a 36-county area by investing in infrastructure improvements, high-speed Internet access, health care and renewable energy.

“I am delighted that Sandy has been confirmed by the Senate. He brings extraordinary talent and experience to the Commission, and I look forward to working with him to strengthen economic opportunities in our region,” U.S. Sen. Susan Collins said in a press release.

U.S. Rep. Michael Michaud also welcomed the news.

“Having worked with Sandy Blitz for years, I am confident that his regional knowledge and his expertise in economic development will serve Maine and the entire region extremely well. Now that he’s been confirmed, he can take the helm of the commission and get it working for our region.”
