Lewis, Martin lift Maine to 2 wins

WINTER PARK, Fla. – Sophomore center fielder Taylor Lewis went 5-for-5 with a homer, two triples, five runs batted in and five runs scored as the University of Maine’s baseball team rallied from 5-0 and 6-1 deficits to beat the University of Pennsylvania 18-8 on Sunday.

On Saturday in Winter Haven, Fla., Joey Martin’s run-scoring double with two outs in the top of the 11th inning gave the Black Bears a 6-5 11-inning victory over the University of Rhode Island.

On Sunday, Maine took the lead for good with five runs in the bottom of the third inning to erase a 6-3 deficit.

Caribou’s Pat Thibodeau hit a two-run single to cap the rally, his first career hit, after Maine had received RBI singles from Ian Leisenheimer, Tyler Petzalek and Lewis.

Lewis belted a three-run homer in the fourth to build the lead to 11-6.

Leisenheimer had three hits and three RBIs for Maine. Petzalek, Lugbauer and Joey Martin had two hits apiece and Justin Latta picked up the win in relief.

Tom Grandieri, Will Davis and Derek Vigoa had two hits each for Penn and Spencer Branigan drove in three runs.

On Saturday, Lewis opened the 11th with a base hit and Tony Patane walked. Michael Fransoso hit into a double play before Martin ripped his double.

Maine had tied the game with two runs in the top of the eighth inning.

Martin drew a leadoff walk and Leisenheimer singled to right.

Patzalek singled home Martin and then Lewis singled home Thibodeau, who pinch-ran for Leisenheimer.

Rhode Island had taken a 4-3 lead with two runs in the bottom of the sixth on a run-producing error and Oliver Palmer’s sacrifice fly.

They added another in the seventh on Kyle Borden’s double, two hit batsmen and a bases-loaded walk.

Mike LeBel doubled home a run in the second to stake URI to a 1-0 lead.

Maine answered with three runs in the fourth on a run-producing error, Patzalek’s RBI fielder’s choice and Lewis’ RBI single.

Zoey Angulo singled home Dan Haverstick, who had also singled, to cut the lead to 3-2 in the fourth.

Lewis had three hits and two RBIs for the 3-6 Black Bears and Patzalek. Leisenheimer and Fransoso had two hits apiece. Patzalek had two RBIs.

LeBel, Milan Adams and Haverstick had two hits each for 0-7 Rhode Island.

Latta picked up the win with four innings of one-hit, one-run relief and Lugbauer tossed a scoreless 11th to pick up the save.

Southern Maine wins two

At Yaphank, N.Y., Collin Henry had four hits, including two doubles and a home run, and five RBIs to lead the University of Southern Maine by Albertus Magnus College 15-4 on Sunday.

The Huskies defeated SUNY-Old Westbury 7-3 on Saturday.

In Saturday’s game, Southern Maine took advantage of three SUNY errors to score four unearned runs. Mike Eaton hit a home run while Henry doubled.

In Sunday’s game, John Carey hit a three-run home run to help spark the Huskies. Mike Eaton added a home run while Roberto Valenti posted two singles.
