Is banning smoking at the University of Maine campus realistic?

The University of Maine will ban smoking on its property in 2012. Is this a sensible step to take, given the toll tobacco takes on health? Will it be effective, given the provisions for assisting those who want to quit? Or does the ban essentially drive smokers underground? Will students smoke in less visible areas, potentially starting more accidental fires? And what about someone working on the university staff – is it fair to ask them to walk or

drive a half-mile or more to get off campus to have a cigarette while on a break?
