A couple of Bangor transients attempted to steal two bottles of liquor from a local grocery store on Saturday, and one was charged with felony robbery after threatening store employees, Bangor police Lt. Tom Regan said Sunday.
Brandon Buchanan, 24, and John Hunt, 19, went into the Hannaford on Union Street around noon Saturday and attempted to leave without paying for two bottles of whiskey and some beef jerky. Store employees stopped Buchanan, who cooperated at first, but Hunt took off running, Regan said.
Buchanan then “started making threats, and staff backed off,” allowing him to leave the store, he said. Both suspects were found soon afterward and arrested. Buchanan, who is known to police, was charged with felony robbery, which carries a penalty of up to 30 years in prison, and Hunt was charged with theft and violating bail conditions.
Both were taken to Penobscot County Jail and remained there Sunday night, a jail official said. (Nok-Noi Ricker, BDN)
