DEXTER, Maine — The State Fire Marshal’s Office was called to investigate the cause of a fire Sunday that damaged a Main Street Hill home.

Ashley Neil was home with her two small children when she smelled smoke in the living room at about 4:15 p.m., Matt Connor, Dexter’s first assistant chief, said Sunday. Neil, who was in another room with one child, ran into her living room and grabbed her other child, who was in a baby swing, and fled the house with the children, he said. The ages of the children were not available late Sunday.

The fire was contained to the living room, but other parts of the two-story home had smoke and water damage, Connor said. He said the home was insured.

Connor credited the department with stopping the fire quickly. “It was a good stop by the Dexter boys,” he said.

Firefighters were assisted by Corinna firefighters. Sangerville firefighters stood by at the Dexter station and Newport stood by at the Corinna station.

The American Red Cross was called to assist Neil and her family.
