ROCKLAND, Maine — The Coast Guard is searching for a fisherman who was forced into the cold waters of Penobscot Bay after his vessel apparently sank late Saturday morning.

Boats from the Coast Guard’s Rockland station as well as a rescue helicopter from Massachusetts were on scene early Saturday afternoon searching area of the bay between Deer Isle and Vinalhaven, according to Chief Tim Steele with Coast Guard Sector Northern New England.

The unnamed fisherman made a distress call sometime before noon that his vessel was taking on water and sinking quickly. The man reportedly managed to grab a hand-held communications radio before going into the water but was not wearing a cold-water survival suit, Steele said.

No one else was believed to be aboard the vessel at the time. No further information was available early Saturday afternoon.
