State YMCA swim meet this weekend at UMaine

ORONO, Maine — The 46th annual John W. Coombs Maine YMCA State Swimming Championships Meet will be held at the Wallace Indoor Pool at the University of Maine on Saturday and Sunday.

Approximately 1,300 competitors from 16 YMCA teams around the state will compete. Bath Area YMCA is the defending champion.

Local YMCAs represented will be Bangor, Dover-Foxcroft, Ellsworth, Mount Desert Island and Old Town-Orono.

The annual swim meet is the largest single youth sports competition leading to a single final championship in the state. In addition to 1,300 competitors, about 5,000 spectators and more tan 200 volunteers are expected.

As many as 20 swimmers will be preparing for or qualifying for the National YMCA Swimming and Diving Championship Meet held in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. On April 7-10.

There will be 88 events for 10 age groups in six sessions. Ages eight and under boys and girls will swim Saturday afternoon. The 10 and under and 12 and under boys will swim Saturday evening. Ages 12 and under girls will swim Sunday morning. Ages 14 and under and senior girls and boys will also swim on Sunday with girls mid-morning and boys in the afternoon.

The John W. Coombs Award will be presented to the winning team. Coombs was a former Executive Director of the Bangor YMCA and was the YMCA professional most directly involved in founding the Maine YMCA Swim League in 1963.

Events begin at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday and 8:40 a.m. on Sunday. Admission per session is $3 for adults and $1 for children. Session programs are $2.
