Germany has 23,000 operating wind turbines with a total nameplate rating of 24,000 megawatts. Wind electric production is 40 billion kilowatt-hours a year, which is 7.5 percent of German electricity use. That same wind power, if installed in the U.S., would produce about 1 percent of U.S. electricity.
