St. Bonaventure edges Black Bears


WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — The University of Maine Black Bears had the tying run on third and the go-ahead run on second with one out in the top of the ninth, but St. Bonaventure University’s Cory Sudbrook struck out the final two batters to secure a 7-6 victory for the Bonnies at the Chain-O-Lakes Park.

St. Bonaventure’s bullpen allowed just one run on three hits and a walk through the final four innings.

Jason Radwan hit a solo home run and Brad Steinbach added a three-run shot to give the Bonnies a 4-0 lead after the first inning, but the Black Bears (2-6) answered back with a four-run fourth and a one-run fifth to take a one-run lead.

St. Bonaventure (1-4) added three runs in the bottom half of the fifth to retake the lead.

Michael Fransoso had a career-high five hits, all singles, and added a run scored and an RBI for the Black Bears. Joe Mercurio singled, doubled and scored a run. Justin Leisenheimer had two singles and two runs scored. Joey Martin knocked in two runs and Taylor Lewis singled twice.

Jessie Bosnik and Billy Urban each doubled and singled with a run scored for the Bonnies.

Eddie Gray (1-1) picked up the win after allowing five runs on nine hits and six walks through five innings.

Steve Perakslis (0-1) took the loss after surrendering seven runs, five earned, on 10 hits and three walks through four innings. He struck out five. A.J. Bazdanes, Barry Keiffer and Myckie Lugbauer provided scoreless relief through four innings.

The Black Bears next play Rhode Island Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in Winter Haven, Fla.
