PLANT CITY, Fla. — The University of Maine’s offense finally plated a couple of runs late, but came up a run short as Western Michigan University edged the Black Bears 3-2 in softball action here Wednesday.
Maine tied it 1-1 in the sixth. Alexis Souhlaris hit a leadoff single and went to third on a Whitney Spangler double before a walk loaded the bases. A fielder’s choice groundout cut down Souhlaris at the plate, but Kali Burnham’s bunt single scored Spangler.
The Broncos answered with two in the top of the seventh via back-to-back doubles and an RBI single.
Maine came back with a run in the bottom of the inning with Terren Hall’s two-out RBI double, but Spangler was thrown out at the plate to end the game.
