Kings trade former UMaine standout Purcell to Lightning

LOS ANGELES — Former University of Maine winger Teddy Purcell, who was the Hockey East Rookie of the Year in 2006-2007, was traded by the Los Angeles Kings to the Tampa Bay Lightning Wednesday. The Kings received 33-year-old center Jeff Halpern. The Lightning also received a third-round draft pick.

Purcell, who was the AHL’s Rookie of the Year in 2007-2008 when he had 25 goals and 58 assists in 67 games for the Manchester Monarchs, had three goals and three assists in 41 games for the Kings.

The 24-year-old Purcell, who signed as a free agent with the Kings after his freshman year at Maine, will be re-united with former Black Bear teammate Mike Lundin, who is a defenseman for the Lightning.

Purcell had eight goals and 17 assists in 91 career NHL games for the Kings. He had 16 & 27 in 40 games for Maine in helping them reach the Frozen Four.
