PORTLAND, Maine — A 48-year-old man is going to prison in Maine for 21 years for breaking into a home, attacking the homeowner in his sleep and leaving him for dead.

Ephriam Bennett was sentenced Wednesday in Cumberland County Superior Court. He pleaded guilty in October to elevated aggravated assault, kidnapping, robbery and other charges.

Bennett was living in a camper in Standish last winter when he broke into a nearby home. Over a period of hours, he kicked and stabbed Richard Carlson and tied him up with duct tape.

The Portland Press Herald says Carlson told Justice Thomas Warren he hasn’t worked as a carpenter since the attack and his home is in foreclosure. He says he suffered stab wounds and broken ribs, and lost some teeth.
