DEXTER, Maine — A local man was arrested Monday night for allegedly cultivating marijuana, the third person charged by Dexter police in recent days with drug violations.

James Beal Jr., 50, was arrested and charged with cultivating marijuana. The arrest came after two Dexter police officers went to Beal’s Route 7 home for a bail check and noticed the marijuana plants, according to Cpl. Kevin Wintle of the Dexter Police Department.

Wintle said about three “good-size” plants were seized from Beal’s home by Officers Gary Morin and Damien Pickel.

On Feb. 27, Brent Stewart Jr., 23, of Dexter was summoned on a charge of marijuana cultivation, and Beth Fish, 23, of Dexter was summoned on charges of having a usable amount of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Wintle said police received a tip that the couple were growing marijuana, and a consent search was made of their Liberty Street home. During a search, three or four marijuana plants were found along with other growing materials, Wintle said.

Beal, Stewart and Fish are expected to make their initial court appearances on March 24 in Newport District Court.
