Should Brewer High School have suspended students for their Facebook comments?

The school suspended three students for posting comments that could be seen as taunting,

bullying and possibly racist, aimed at basketball players from Edward Little High School after that school’s team defeated the Brewer team in tournament action. If the comments were posted on personal computers during non-school hours off campus, should the school have intervened? Or should school officials have notified parents and let them take action? Are the comments, even if they are offensive, akin to students pushing and shoving on a public playground during a game, and therefore out of the school’s realm? Or were the students representing the school, and therefore were justifiably held responsible?
