UNITY, Maine — A report of an accident Thursday night on Quaker Hill Road led to the driver’s arrest on a charge of operating under the influence.
William M. Hegstrom, 36, of Brooks was behind the wheel of a 2006 Chevrolet at about 11 p.m. when he drove onto the shoulder and apparently overcorrected, Chief Deputy Robert Keating of the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office said Friday.
Hegstrom went across the oncoming lane and rolled the vehicle. He was checked by an ambulance crew and found to be OK, Keating said.
However, Deputy David Mushrall allegedly could smell intoxicants on the driver’s breath when they were talking about the accident.
Mushrall had Hegstrom conduct field sobriety tests and brought him to Waldo County Jail. After submitting to a breathalyzer test, Hegstrom was arrested and charged with OUI.
Although no damage estimate was available in the police report, Mushrall wrote that he thought the vehicle would be a total loss.
